PM Modi reacted to the New Delhi railway station stampede incident and condoled the loss of lives due to the chaos.

Maha Kumbh Crowd Stampede: At least 15 people including three children lost their lives after a stampede-like situation broke out at the New Delhi railway station late on Saturday evening, triggering chaos on platforms number 14 and 15, Chief Casualty Medical Officer, LNJP hospital said. The Medical officer further stated that 10 people sustained injuries due to the chaos at the railway station.

A Delhi Fire Services (DFS) official said that four fire tenders were rushed to the site after a call was received from the railway station. According to media reports, four women fainted due to suffocation and were rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Earlier, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Railway, KPS Malhotra had said that there was a stampede-like situation at platform no. 14 and near the escalator near platform no. 1 as two trains were late and lots of passengers were left stranded at the railway station.

"15 people had been injured in a stampede-like situation at New Delhi Railway Station. When Prayagraj Express was standing at platform no. 14, lots of public were present at the platform. Swatantrata Senani Express and Bhubaneshwar Rajdhani were delayed, and passengers of these trains were also present at platform no. 12,13 and 14. As per the information, 1500 general tickets were sold - that’s why the crowd became uncontrollable. There was a stampede-like situation at platform no. 14 and near the escalator near platform no. 1," Malhotra said.

The incident occurred around 9:55 pm, prompting an emergency response. Authorities immediately dispatched rescue teams, and four fire tenders were rushed to the site to assist in the relief efforts, DFS chief Atul Garg said.

Reacting to the chaos at the railway station, the Ministry of Railways said that the Railway Police and Delhi Police have reached the station and the situation is under control. The ministry further stated that the injured had been taken to the hospital.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Delhi Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena reacted to the stampede incident and condoled loss of lives. "Distressed by the stampede at New Delhi Railway Station. My thoughts are with all those who have lost their loved ones. I pray that the injured have a speedy recovery. The authorities are assisting all those who have been affected by this stampede," PM Modi said in a post on X.

"Devastating news from New Delhi Railway Station. I am extremely pained by the loss of lives due to stampede on Railway platform. In this hour of grief, my thoughts are with the bereaved families. Praying for the speedy of the injured," Singh said in a post on X.

Saxena said there was an unfortunate and tragic incident of "loss of lives and injuries" due to "disorder and stampede" at the station. Official sources at the Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Narain (LNJP) Hospital said around 10-12 patients were brought to the facility. "A few fatalities have also been reported though the exact number is yet to be confirmed. Most of the patients have sustained injuries requiring surgery or orthopaedic treatment," one of the sources told PTI.

Eyewitnesses said due to a huge rush at the station, several passengers got fainted because of suffocation. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw expressed his grief at the death of people in a stampede that occurred Saturday evening at the New Delhi Railway Station.

Vaishnaw said on X, "Deeply saddened by the unfortunate stampede that occurred at New Delhi Railway Station. My prayers are with all those who have lost their loved ones. The entire team is working to assist all those who have been affected by this tragic incident." According to a Railway Board press statement, an "unprecedented rush" developed at around 9.30 pm on Saturday at New Delhi Railway Station near platforms 13 and 14.

"Due to the sudden surge in passengers, some individuals fainted, which led to rumors of a stampede-like situation, causing panic among travelers. The situation was later brought under control by easing the congestion," the statement said. It added, "Northern Railways promptly operated four special trains to evacuate the unexpected rush. As a result, the crowd has now significantly reduced."

The injured passengers were taken to nearby hospitals by the Railway Protection Force (RPF) and Delhi Police, it said. "Indian Railways has ordered a high-level inquiry into this unfortunate incident," the press note said.
